Senior Newsletter - March

Senior Newsletter - March 2021
This communication was sent digitally to all grade 12 students on March 11, 2021. A physical copy was mailed home to families and can be found attached below.

Hello Class of 2021!

We know the past month has been difficult for our NLHSMMC Community. Please know that staff and faculty continue to be here for any student who is in need of support, whether that be just someone to listen, someone to help with academics, or anything else you may need. Please do not hesitate to reach out to a teacher, counselor, or any support staff if you are feeling overwhelmed.

While it feels like 2021 has just begun, we are already into March and beginning to get closer to the Main Event this Spring. We wanted to share with you some important messages and get your input.

We first want to reiterate that we are still uncertain of how these events are going to look – everything is dependent upon State, City, and District protocols in regard to COVID-19. The last direction provided to our team was no indoor events, and outdoor events must be restricted to 200 people. With this protocol in place, we would not be able to hold a “regular graduation” with the entire graduating class as in past years. We are looking at a variety of possibilities, including smaller in-person ceremonies and a larger “drive-in” style similar to the Class of 2020’s event. Please know that the HS team is committed to providing the most memorable experience for our Seniors and are hoping just as much as you are that come June, it will be safe for graduates, families, staff, and guests to unite as one to celebrate your accomplishment.

With that being said, there is still a lot that is being done behind-the-scenes for the end of the year. Here is a quick glance:

GRADUATION CEREMONY UPDATES

The official graduation date will be finalized by the Board of Education by the end of March. We will share as soon as it is confirmed. Cap and gowns have been ordered for all students who are at this time eligible to participate in the ceremonies. We are hoping to receive these sometime in the next month or so – information will be sent home about pricing and distribution dates once we have them physically on site. Please continue to stay tuned for updates on this and all other graduation prep as we get closer to June.

OFFICIAL LEGAL NAMES FOR GRADUATES (FOR DIPLOMA PURPOSES)

There are still quite a few seniors that have not confirmed their legal name for their diploma. Paper forms were mailed home, and reminders sent via robo-call, parent email, and student email several times over the month of February. Please note the legal name on file with New London Public Schools (i.e. the legal name listed on your student’s PowerSchool account) will be the name used on all graduation materials moving forward for any student or family who does not touch base with us by March 31. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Favalora at favaloras@newlondon.org. Thank you to everyone who has already completed this task!

New this school year, the 2021 Clipper will be including "Senior Recognition Ads!" Starting at $25.00 each, parents and families have the opportunity to shout out your student and their accomplishments by placing an ad in the NLHSMMC yearbook. For those interested, please visit the Josten’s website to start your ad!

Pre-orders are also open for this year’s yearbook! Yearbooks are $50.00 each and must be ordered by April 16. As in past years, there will be no yearbooks available for purchase at the end of the school year. Only students who preorder will be guaranteed a yearbook in June. SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE!

Perhaps the most important part of this communication – there is FREE MONEY out there for students looking to continue their education! Seniors were given a list of scholarships in their English class last week.  Scholarships can also be found on Naviance and copies of the applications are available in the STMHS Student Union! Feel free to stop by and grab any and all that apply to you! School Counselors are available to provide more information and help you complete these applications – please see the attached flyer for scholarship help session (both in-person and over Teams) and materials needed.

Now… we are looking for YOUR input, Class of 2021!!

SENIOR SURVEY (From Your Senior Class Officers)

In working around the previously mentioned COVID guidelines and protocols, your Senior Class Officers are looking to get your thoughts about Senior Prom. Again, at this time we cannot guarantee it will be able to be held, but we are looking at all options to be able to provide some sort of event for our Seniors. Please complete this survey by clicking here so that your Class Officers can get a better idea of what you would be interested in! *SURVEY CLOSED 3/15

YEARBOOK – SENIOR SUPERLATIVES!

Ms. Arzamarski and the Yearbook team are working hard on this year’s Clipper! Following tradition, the Senior Class is invited to vote on their Senior Superlatives. The team came up with a bunch of different potential categories and are now looking for your opinion! Please use the following survey (located here) to select which of the provided options you would like to vote on this year! Once we have secured the Top 15 Superlatives, a new survey will be given for you to nominate for your classmates! This survey will close on Friday at 2PM. *SURVEY CLOSED 3/15

That is all for now! Please continue to stay tuned for more!! Be safe, Whalers!
